Distance

Shaab El Erg is located around 11 km north-east of El Gouna. You can reach the reef in around 1 to 1.5 hours by day boat, while the speedboat covers the distance in around 30 minutes.

Depths

Diving depths range from 6 to 24 meters, with a sandy bottom at a depth of around 10 meters. The sheltered lagoon areas are ideal for beginners, while the deeper sections are also worthwhile for experienced divers.

Current

There are usually light to moderate currents that make diving pleasant. On some days, the current can be a little stronger, which makes the reef an exciting drift dive spot.

  • Clownfish that make their home between the protective tentacles of the anemones.
  • Scorpionfish, perfectly camouflaged between coral and sand.
  • Octopuses, masters of camouflage, skillfully hide in crevices.
  • Elegant barracudas that move majestically through the blue.
  • Moray eels curiously watching the divers from their hiding places.
  • Colorful nudibranchs and flatworms, a highlight for macro fans.
  • An impressive coral reef that offers soft and hard corals in all shapes and colors.

Shaab El Erg is one of the best places in the region to see wild dolphins. The animals often approach curiously, but there is no guarantee of a sighting.
The gentle reef structure with shallow lagoons makes the spot perfect for relaxed dives.
